Guangzhou

Guang Zhou is a city of contrasts. It is a modern city with historical remanents of ancient guangzhou city interleaved in a built-up city scape.

A trip to Sa Mian Islet

Taking the subway in GuangZhou

Sa Mian islet is actually a part of GuangZhou city, it is located at the joint of 3 rivers at Pearl river. It is separated from the mainland by a small canal, forming an islet. On the islet are lots of colonial eurpoean styled old buildings.

Shang Xia Jiu Lu

Near Sa Mian islet is a well known street in GuangZhou: Shang Xia Jiu Lu (road). On this pedestrian street, you find a long row of shophouses selling apparels, shoes, and gourmet cantonese foods. Nearby are also shophouses selling all forms of handicrafts such as decorative stone carvings, etc. Accordingly, this is also the place where the 1st euporeans arrived and dwelled.

The sign reads: first arrival place of westeners

Bei Jing Lu

Another well known merchandise street in Guangzhou is Bei Jing Lu (Road). On this pedestrian mall you find modern shopping complexes. The interesting part of this mall is you'd find ruins of a thousand year old road that remains from ancient guangzhou city (dating back to the song dynasty).
