I don't think I will post my letters and their replies (out of respect for
privacy), but I will summarize the salient points:
I will do this on a their-point/my-counter basis (T/M):
T1) TV3 is a foreign commercial station and the govt should not spend tax
payers monies to enable them to reach the Singapore heartland.
M1) How is it that the govt can see it fit not to spend money to enable
access, but sees it fit to spend money to remove the access?
T1) {never answered}
T2) TV3 has cigarette company ads.
M2) So does TV1 and TV2 and SBC5 (then). These companies use their brands
to promote fradulent fronts to sell their stupid cigarettes. Why the double
standards? SBC5 used to run Dunhill ads.
T2) Oh, because once upon a time RTM was one with RTS/SBC/TCS. (no comments
on Dunhill ads)
T3) We are a small country and TV stations from other countries can beam their
signals into our nation. Until we can do so, we have to protect our market.
M3) So SCV is a completely local station? 100% of their programming is
foreign. Just because it comes through a local company does not make it
halal.
T4) They have Cantonese-language programming.
M4) So does TV2. Why don't you filter out TV2 also?
T4) Oh, because once upon a time RTM was one with RTS/SBC/TCS.
M5) What if I get my block residents to sign a petition to the Town Council to
modify the antenna to receive TV3?
T5) (never asnswered)
M6) What if my block residents collectively want to put up at our own expense
an antenna to receive TV3?
T6) (never answered)
T7) We have to filter out the signals in order to ensure that the signal
will not interfere with local transmissions.
M7) How come my home-brew worked just fine. Also, how come private apts and
homes have NO difficulty with your so-called interference?
T7) (never answered)
M8) How come no mention was ever made of the filtering of TV3? How come
tax payers moneies were used to pay for the erection of antenna for SCV?
T8) (never answered)
M9) If you are so worried that TV3 will beat the daylights out of SBC/TCS,
then you are propping up a dying organization. Thank god we do not depend on
the CATV's FM outlet for radio. Or else SBC Radio woud still be stuffy.
Competition from Zoo and Coast 100 rudely awoke them. If you can strengthen
SBC/TCS, then you should not worry about competition. Do you still believe
in free trade and free competition? Or it is just hogwash?
T9) We can have free trade and competition if we can beam our signals into
their capital city. Until then, we have to protect our turf.
Well, in a nutshell that is it. Frankly, I am fed up with the I-know-what-
is-good-for-you-so-shut-up attitude. My only objective in bringing this
to the net/web is to show that if you are not vigilant, you will be snooked.
The irony of all fo this is that although I can receive TV3 and everything,
I am hardly at home to watch it or TV for that matter. But what I am fighting
is the principle behind this and for the removal/abolishment/reversal of this
braindead policy.
Enjoy.
