Bad Hair Day by "Weird Al" Yankovic

"Weird Al" has definitely topped himself on his latest album, "Bad Hair Day." As always, his parodies are very clever, but the originals are really outstanding on this album. The instrumentals are great, and the *POLKA* is excellent. (Everyone needs to hear Beck's Loser in polka format.) I especially enjoy Al's first a cappella song, 'Since You've Been Gone' which, besides being very funny, is a great song musically as well. The album is hilarious and completely worth buying!

While I'm not quite ready to place this album above "Sign O' The Times," as O(+>'s greatest album ever, I will say that this album is a landmark, without a doubt. I've always considered myself to be a die hard fan of The Artist. "Purple Rain" was the soundtrack of my adolescence. At one time or another, I've owned every album he's ever produced. But I'd be lying if I said that I was truly impressed by everything he's ever done. There seem to be two types of Prince fans, fans who swear by anything with his name or symbol on it, and fans who think a song is only good if its played on the radio every half hour. Then there are fans like myself. As much as I enjoy listening to "When D!

Ironic, You Outta Know, Hand in my Pocket by Alanis Morisette

Usually, i go by the saying "if you don't have anything good to say, don't say it at all." However, i'm feeling right now that i must speak out . i think alanis has a great potential. she has a beautiful voice. could have . i think if she stopped tensing her voice and let herself relax a bit, she would be much easier to listen to . sometimes i think alanis is hyperventialting (sp.) but alanis is who she is, and yeeha. i think alot of people would probably like these songs. for 'mainstream', she's pretty outspoken . i don't like her 'theatre' line. i kind of took it as an excuse to let us know she has actually had sex. sure she's bad. so is michael jackson. it's a nice break for easy listeners to hear about 'the wild side'.but don't get too wild alanis. i find her !songs repetitive and there's something else about them i don't like. "ironic" makes it seem like she's just found out what ironic means. probably with the help of 'reality bites' . hey! let's write a list of things that are, 'ironic'. i just think, what's your point alanis? same thing with 'hand in my pocket' . it's another song that just lists 'what she is'. even she looks pretty bored in the video clip. the language of advertising is also well known for it's use of repetition to drill something into the heads of their audience. is anyone turning on a light switch here? i feel mean now. but it had to be said. like i said, alanis does have great potential. but we all know, some of us too well, potential is a burden if that's all it ever is.

School House Rock! Rocks by Various Artists

I for one am a sucker for dreams of yesteryear, when everything was so much easier, gas was under a dollar a gallon, Mister Rogers was a mentor, and Saturday morning cartoons was the only thing I thought about all week (besides G.I. Joe, the ice-cream man, and playing doctor with the neighborhood girls, of course). Well, if you like to rehash all those memories of your youth as much as I do, I have a time-traveling tool for you. "School House Rock! Rocks," released recently on Lava Records, is a compilation of all those great cartoon/song/moral messages of our younger years sung by our favorit alternabands of today. Some of the better songs on the compilation are,"Three Is A Magic Number," performed by Blind Melon,"The Shot Heard 'Round The World," redone by Ween,"Verb: That's Wha!t's Happening," technoed-out by Moby,"I'm Just A Bill," by the Deluxx Folk Implosion, and "Conjuction Junction," grooved-out by Better Than Ezra. But, the winner on this album, the head honcho, king of zaire, best of the bunch, head cheese, top dog, if you will, is,"The Tale of Mr. Morton," rapped by Skee-Lo. As soon as the first note rings out on this record you will be transformed into the dirty-faced kid sitting in front of the tube, watching cartoons and eating cereal again, only this time your mom won't be screaming orders in your ear... you can daydream in peace.

Calling Up Spirits by Dick Dale

The insert of Dick Dale's newest creation reads:"I must tell you there was a time, that there was life, that was free from disease, free from illness, free from taxes, free from greed. Untrust was unheard of: they only had happiness, harmony and caring for their children with open hearts. Yes, they killed, but only to eat. Then, the white man came... I reach out to the spirits of the indigenous ones that were here first and call up their spirits." What he should have been calling up was some more talent for this painfully long, uncreative album. Although the message is good, I guess, yeah...kill whitey and all that crap. I must tell you there was a time, when Dick Dale was probably an ingenious songwriter and surf guitar God, but that time has passed. This is the n!ow, and heck, his most famous tune to date, "Misirlou," the theme from Pulp Fiction is even beginning to get on my nerves. I believe that surf guitar can be quite cool, but my theory is that you can only take it in small doses. To be frank, I got damn bored listening to this whole album at once. Although there are some cuts on it that I wouldn't mind hearing as singles now and then, like his interesting cover of Madonna's "Fever" and a rambunctious tune called "Gypsy Fire," the album as a whole, is too long and too trite.

Catch And Release by Sister Psycic

Sister Psychic has endured more heartbreaks than most bands in their musical career. During their second release, they found themselvs missing a sure-fire radio hit by only two weeks because of their record label dragging it's feet, of all things, over the album artwork! The full glory of "Kim The Waitress," a hit song, went to the band Material Issue because of this delay. (I still think Sister Psychic's version is better). The boys and Restless Records went their seprate ways and as a long time fan of Sister Psychic, I was bummed thinking that this was going to be the end of a great band. Not so, for low and behold, "Catch And Release" is the latest effort by Sister Psychic which holds even greater promise and is by far their "best ever" album. T!he basic winning formula hasn't 0Achanged and at it's core is pure rock power-pop that is both well written and excuted without a glitch. Andy Davenhall is one of the best when it comes to writing this type of music, and wrote all the songs found on "Catch And Release," with the exception of one that he Co-wrote. Besides Andy doing the writing/vocals/guitar and keys, we find John Fleischman on the drums/vocals/noise and Pat Pederson on bass. Three talented musicians, simple, tight with a clean delivery make for one great sound, and it shows on this new release. All the tracks on this 11 song CD (plus a hidden one) are great with half of them being radio hits in their own right. Look to songs "Bob," "Garden," "Hollywood," "Japan," "Groove" and my personal pick "If I Were God" to blow you away. Even the hidden track rocks (I think it's called "Space Chimp! ") and its one that pales Brownsville Station's "Martianoogie" in stoner rock ability. Thanks to Andy and crew, we all have some really great Northwest rock that will keep us tapping our toes.

Hi, My Name Is Jonny by Jonny Polonski

What impressed me most about this American Records debut is the diversity throughout the album. From the hooky, "Love Lovely Love," to the intimate, "Evil Scurvy Love," to the wacky, "Uh-Oh," this album is hard to turn off once it has begun to spin. The sound of Jonny Polonski is one that changes from song to song, but nevertheless, rings out a constant positive vibe. The story behind the album is also very fascinating. It seems that when Polonski was growing up he had a fearless attitude towards show business and the entertainers in it. On any given day, Polonski would simply sit down in his bedroom, phone in hand, and proceed to call information around the country, getting as many phone numbers of rock stars as he could. Then, he would call them. Just shoot the breeze. Offer them a demo. Sounds pretty! simple, huh? Well, eventually his persistence payed off when a friend of Frank Black, formerly of The Pixies, obtained a Polonski demo tape. Needless to say, Black listened to it and loved it. He then proceeded to take the curly-haired Polonski under his wing, actually pitching this album to the boys down at American himself, and now you can catch Jonny P. opening up for Black on the current Cult of Ray Tour. If you get a chance to see this show live, do yourself a favor a spend the cash, you'll thank me later for it. But, why wait, if I were you I would go get this album now, so I knew all the words come show time. A couple other great tunes off this album include, "Half Mind," very smooth and tasty, as well as,"Ugly and Dead Too," a real cool hate your ex-girlfriend tune. Bye, my name is Olaf.

Bullet with butterfly wings mixes a strong instrumental piece with screams and Love is a crazy piece of a dirty stuff. It may sound strange but it's really enjoyable. The last song, Farewell and Goodnight is here to prove their talent. The song reminds me of another ending song of a classical album: Good night, by the Beatles.

Ride the fader by Chavez

Ride the Fader, Chavez's second full length release is a shimmering fusion of jangley pop and hard rock that will undeniabley be tagged as one of the years best albums. More than a few critic's raved about last years "Gone Glimmering" saying it just may be the future of hard rock, but if anything "Ride the Fader" surpasses and redifines that ambiguous statement. It takes off like a roller coaster (literally) swerving and looping around all preconceptions of what a sonic induced pop band should sound like. From the skewered guitar pop cresendo's of "New Room" and "Our boy's will shine tonight" to the reflective "Unreal is Here" and "Ever Overpsyched", Chavez have none the less accomplished a formidable task: They've created an album that soars and reflects without sounding like any of the other homogenous power pop sludge!

Siamese Dream by Smashing Pumpkins

Definitely the finest masterpiece from the Pumpkins. This post-Gish , pre- Mellon Collie album shows the Pumpkins's transition form VERY hard to toning it down . Siamese Dream combines soft drony songs , such as Luna,Disarm,Soma and Sweet sweet with harder songs like Quiet and Geek USA with inbetween songs like Rocket, Mayonnaise , and their 1992 breakthrough hit , "Today"(without a doubt the best song on the CD). The CD has 13 songsm and all of them are so good , that you can listen to the entire album without having to skip a song to get to another , like you might have to with other CDs , simply because every song satisfies. Billy Corgan , James Iha , and D'Arcy Wretzky-Brown deserve a loud round of cheers and applause for "the greatest"("Today"!

Siamese Dream by Smashing Pumpkins

Easily the greatest album of the '90's. Billy Corgan explores personal feelings of loneliness, anger, betrayal, and sadness like no other musician of his generation could ever dream of. The beautiful contrasts between hard and soft within the same song creates a level of tension and unease which perfectly accompanies the poetic lyrics. Such apathetic masterpieces as today and hummer set the tone for the album and the great song disarm finishes it off. A must have in any modern rock collection. On a scale from 1 to 10, give this one a 100. An absolute masterpiece which is impossible to get sick of.

THE LIVING RETURN by SWING OUT SISTER

YET ANOTHER EPISODE IN THIS BAND'S SEARCH FOR THE PERFECT SOUND, THE PERFECT INSTUMENTATION, AND THE PERFECT SONG, Swing Out Sister's "The Living Return" (1994) is by far one of the band's greatest works since "Breakout". Dismissing the lush string sound found in theie first three albums, Corinne, Andy, and friends venture into a place that pays tribute to their influences: jazz and good old '70s R&B. The lyrics are still haunting, Corinne's voice more mature, and the high production values are still evident: take a listen to "All In Your Mind" and "Better Make It Better". In "Making the Right Move", they capture sensuality in ways not typical of most music heard now. Highly recommended not only for fans of the band, but also to those seeking some relief from the "Seattle Sound!" as well as those who want to take a nostalgic trip back to the time when radio and pop were still inventive and enjoyable.

The new porno for pyros cd/cant remember title... by porno for pyros

The new cd is great. It is pretty mellow but the combination of perry farrell's lyrics with musicians such as stevie perkins and mike watt, its excellent! The best part is that pornos music is still unique, they have managed to pull off another cd with tracks that dont all sound the same or sound typical of mtv or pop radio lately. Tahitian Moon is the first single, I think its also available on the Cable Guy Soundtrack, is a very kool song. The music is awesome and not too mellow, and the lyrics are pretty basic but expressive the way farrell has always been...Anyhow, I think its worth the money I'm enjoying a great deal. Some songs like Tahitian are pretty moderately paced, the mood of the album is rather mellow. The main reason to buy it is becuz it is different! Enjoy!

What's the Story, Morning Glory by Oasis

In many ways, Oasis' new album is far superior to their debut (Definitely Maybe). On What's the Story, Morning Glory, the band have found the perfect combination between the 60's Beetles' style and the style of modern rock. The voice of the lead singer combined with excellent guitaring and drumming make for an incredible album. It is, in my opinion, far better than Blur's new album as it contains far more good tracks. The album does not rely heavily on 'Wonderwall' as Blur's does on "Country House." The album is brilliantly concluded with a 7 minute masterpiece - Champagne Supernova. This final track is, in a way, similar to Bohemian Rhapsody (Queen) in that the style of the song often changes from fast to slow, from soft to heavy, without the song sounding broken up in places. In conclusion, this album is BRILLIANT!!!!! Buy it now!!!

In your arms by Emjay

"...the same old music, the same old song..." (track 3). Those DON'T describe Emjay's seriously kick-ass new CD. It's over 70 minutes of great dance-esque music. She's got a lovely voice, and she also writes rather original songs. Most dance groups consist of at least 1 male and 1 female. The females are doomed to singing the chorus, while the guys sing annoying rap-like bits, ruining the song. Emjay is a solo act, and that works in her favor. All the songs are nice and long, and catchy too. I'm not sure what her real name is (it's Marie J......), but she should have gotten those awards instead of Alanis Morisette. Emjay may only be starting out, but if this is any indication of things to come, then I can't wait.

If you're a RUSH fan, there's something new on the Racks for you. It's called WORKING MAN, and it's an aural pleasure that will stir old memories of your first RUSH album spinning around on your first portable record player! The CD is a tribute to one of the greatest Prog. Rock bands still around. The only drawback is that you have to listen to George Lynch and Devin Townsend butcher up Anthem and Natural Science. The rest are faithful to RUSH standards and are worthy to be on a RUSH tribute CD. Give the following a good listen: Analog Kid, Closer to the Heart (thank you, Fates Warning, for the wisdom to leave great alone!), Red Barchetta (Steve Morse is superb on this and La Villa Strangiato), Freewill, and Jacob's Ladder. Some dweeb named Robert Berry made a faithful reproduction of Mission, but it reeks so bad of "Studio" that! you may want to give it one listen and then skip over it afterwards. I find it very interesting that so many of todays big named artists are writing songs about aliens and stuff... I guess because it is so mysterious a topic. The stand-out cut on this album is,"Unmarked Helicopters," by the New York based, Soul Coughing. Nick Cave, Frank Black, and R.E.M. are some of the other bands you'll find on this compilation, sad thing is that the efforts they put forth are really only worthy of bad b-side consideration.
