Mountaineering Basics

Mountaineering as a sport has developed steadily over the last century to a point where there is much technical skills that can be acquired in a systematic way just like any other sport. The mountaineering literature is immense - from basic technical skills to accounts of mountaineering expeditions to the highest mountains in the world - successes as well as tragedies. Much can be learnt by studying the written record and instructional texts even before you go for a practical mountaineering course abroad.

I plan to introduce a basic mountaineering course for interested participants. Upon completion of this concept course which also involves some practical training, you will be well equipped to go on some guided mountaineering expeditions that are suitable for novice climbers. This course will also give you a head start if you plan to go abroad to take up a practical mountaineering program.

Meanwhile, enjoy a few pictures of what you can expect if you go on a mountaineering expedition.

Update Sept 2004: My plan has been realised. I have introduced a basic mountaineering course at national level. See SMF website http://www.smf.org.sg. The first course has begun for 10 enthusiastic participants.

Update April 2005:  Five enthusiatic trainees from my first course are departing for India April 16 for field training. More details later on how they faired. The second course has just completed. the 3rd theory and practice course will be held in July.  See SMF website http://www.smf.org.sg for more details. Next India field training is scheduled for Sept 10 to Sept 25 2005.
