Acquire Outdoor Skills

UPDATE April/May 2005: I am now in a position to organize outdoor training for any interested group or school. The training can be tailored to the group or school requirements. Please contact me at yipsh@pacific.net.sg for an no obligation enquiry.  Currently, I have already started a Basic Adventure Course with a secondary school and hope to more in the future when I gain more experience in handling such training. The national basic mountaineering course (SNCM) has been launched and is doing well. The first batch of trainees will be off to India for their field training in April/May 2005. Visit SMF website at http://www.smf.org.sg for more details of this course.

As with any hobby or sport, it takes time and effort to learn the basic skills and gain experience in the outdoors. The best way to learn and gain experience is to join an outdoor club and also take relevant outdoor courses.

For novices, a good place to start would be to join the Singapore Adventurers’ Club. This club is run by volunteers and is one of the oldest adventure clubs in Singapore. I am also a life member there. There are other such clubs in Singapore – ask around when you are buying camping equipment from the camping stores in Singapore. Some community centres also organize outdoor activities.

There are also a few travel companies in Singapore that specialize in outdoor and soft adventure activities.

For those who are serious about taking up outdoor education, you might want to consider signing up for courses in the various outdoor sports such as sports climbing, outdoor leadership, kayaking etc. For outdoor leadership, PA runs a very good program for Adventure leadership training called the Singapore Adventure Leader Training or SALT for short.

The Singapore Mountaineering Federation (SMF) will be running SALT courses in the future.
