Rowaling Trek

We did the remote Rowaling Trek in 1998 when the valley was opened to trekkers.  A half-day bus ride took us to the starting point of Charikot. We proceeded up the valley past the settlement of Beding and on to Na (4183m). From Na, we continued our ascent to high pastures and the next day we crossed the difficult Yalung La (5310m). It gets very rocky towards the top of the pass and large boulders have to be climbed. The top of the pass consist of about 10m high steep rock which requires the use of a rope and knowledge of some basic rock climbing techniques and equipment.  The other side of the Yalung La is very remote and rarely visited, so you must be fully equipped and self-sufficient for the next few days.

On our trip, our guide was not even sure of the way, and we lost two days looking for the right way down the valley. Be sure to recruit a guide who knows the route as we really had a scary experience in such a remote area where no help can be obtained. Fortunately, we managed to find the route and within several days we were back to lower elevations down the valley and was then able to replenish our food supply from the local villagers.

Allow 14-16 days for this trek. At least one member of your group should have basic rock climbing skills to assist the group to cross the Yalung La. Bring along a climbing rope, several harnesses and some belay devices.
